HCS Soccer at Lee Academy

Cougar soccer hits the ground running in 2012 with a 3:00 game at Lee Academy on January 2. Yes, we are missing the majority of our first day back at school. This is my Christmas gift to the team. We will get out of class at 10:00 (break for high school or the middle of 2nd period for jr. high), and I hope to leave campus by 10:15. Country Woods Baptist Church has very graciously offered its vans for our road trip, so we don't have to sort out the normal carpool details. We will stop for lunch at a Subway or something similar, probably in Yazoo City, so players will need to bring money or pack a lunch. If all goes well, we will be back in Jackson before 9, even if we stop for a quick supper.

If you will be making the trip, you can click here for directions.

Semester Exams Week

Now that all of my exams have come to an end, I am working on finalizing grades for the semester. I hope to finish doing that today, which would mean that the grades that you see after 6:00 tonight would be accurate.

9th Adv. students and parents please note the following: STI does not properly weight the semester exam score when averaging semester grades. Because of this, we hand weight the grades and enter the weighted grade into STI. That is why you may see grades above 100 for the semester exam score.

If you need to get in touch with me over the break, please leave a comment here. I will use the contact information in STI to reach you so that you do not have to post a personal phone number or e-mail address on the internet for all to see.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this semester, and I'm looking forward to another one (and Shakespeare!) starting in a couple of weeks.

Have a merry Christmas!

Extra Credit: 9th English regular

The following is a bonus opportunity for 9th English regular. It is completely optional. Your work must be turned in by 2:20 (the tardy bell for 7th if we're on regular schedule) on December 9. I will not accept late assignments or assignments that do not meet the requirements listed below. I will grade them and replace the lowest test grade of this term with whatever score is earned--even if it is lower than the original. Do not waste your time or mine by turning in inferior work.

The Assignment

Create a model of a setting in Animal Farm. The students can use any medium--wood, shoe boxes, cardboard--as long as the model is three-dimensional. The model should be labeled in detail. The students will write a one-page explanation that coincides with the model, demonstrating that they understand not only what is happening, but why it is significant to the story.

Your explanation must meet the following requirements:

  • one full page, typed
  • double spaced
  • size 12 Times New Roman font
  • one inch margins
  • one full page

The diorama is worth 50 points. It will be graded on accuracy, aesthetics, and creativity. The one-page explanation is worth 50 points. It will be graded on accuracy and proper grammar and mechanics.

Extra Credit - 9th English Advanced

The following is a bonus opportunity for 9th English Advanced. It is completely optional. Your work must be turned in by 2:20 on December 9. I will not accept late assignments or assignments that do not meet the requirements listed below. I will grade them and replace the lowest test grade of this term with whatever score is earned--even if it is lower than the original. Do not waste your time or mine by turning in inferior work.

The Assignment
Read "Harrison Bergeron." If you do not have the copies that I made available to the class, you may go here or download the pdf here. In a well-developed essay, compare and contrast the societies in George Orwell's Animal Farm and Kurt Vonnegut's "Harrison Bergeron," paying special attention to how those societies handle the concepts of freedom versus equality. Your essay must meet the following requirements:
  • typed
  • double spaced
  • size 12 Times New Roman font
  • one inch margins
  • 2-3 full pages
Things to avoid:
  • Unnecessary summary. While I expect you to use specific examples from the stories, I do not want you to retell large portions of the stories themselves. Use specific details to prove your point, not to take up space.
  • "You." Avoid using "you" in the essay unless directly quoting one of the works.
Do not turn in someone else's work as your own. If you do, you will receive a zero for a test grade, and you will be reported to the Honor Council for further consequences.

Because the only works that you will quote in your essay are the two stories, it is not necessary to include citation or to have a "works cited" page. Your paper does not need a title page or a fancy folder. Just make sure that your name is on it.

Start the assignment early enough that you can ask me questions that arise. If you wait until the night before it is due, I cannot help you.

9 Weeks Test

I have included the 9-weeks exam schedule at the bottom of this post. Our test is Monday, October 3. Below and I am linking to the 9th English and the 9th English Advanced study guides here. Also, I will link here to an answer key if anyone will post and ask for the answers to specific exercises. If you need extra help, I can give you copies of workbook pages and post more answers to them here.
Here are the study guides:

***I was originally going to post an answer key here to all of the exercises, but I soon realized that there are about forty of them, and I do not want to waste my time typing all of that up if no one really wants to use it. If you want answers to a particular section, leave a comment with the pages and exercise numbers and I'll be glad to make keys for those sections.

If this is not enough, come to with with specific questions or concerns so that I know how to best help you. I will not answer any questions 2 minutes before the exam.

Tuesday 10-4: Math, Foreign Language

English classes 9/12 - 9/16

My internet connection has gone out at my house. I will update this with an explanation of what we've done this week as soon as I can get the problem corrected. We've started verbals, a category which usually proves very difficult for high school English students. I will have several good resources to help you guys posted here in the next few days.

Future Site of Coach Taylor's English Blog

This blog will eventually be a resource for students (or parents of students) in my classes at Hillcrest Christian School. Once this blog is up and running, I plan to update it quite often throughout the year. My plan is to update it weekly if not more often, but only time will tell. Until then, make sure you knock out your summer reading.

General Information

All Classes
It's the English Blog! Try to contain your excitement. The purpose of this blog is to supplement the information provided on STI. I can post videos that I find helpful, link to other English-related resources, and make copies of certain handouts available. Also, this gives students and parents another way to touch base with me and keep up with what is going on in class.

I use LibreOffice to create all of my handouts, but I will try to save all of the files as either a .pdf or an .rtf to avoid format issues.

Feel free to leave comments, questions, or suggestions. No log-in is required to comment, so you do not need to any sort of account. Please leave your name at the end of the comment unless you want it to be anonymous.

Because anyone can leave a comment, I have set up the blog to require my approval before your comment can be viewed by other visitors. Just because your comment does not show up immediately does not mean that it did not go through.

I am excited about all of my classes this year, and I hope you are as well.

My schedule is as follows:
1st - English 9 Advanced
2nd - Writing Skills
3rd - Planning
4th - Speech
5th - English 9
6th - English 9
7th - Soccer

Until soccer seasons starts, I will be in my room until 3:30 every day. After soccer gets rolling (October), I will leave my room at the end of 6th.

Below are links to the upper school's updated dress code and summer reading list.
